Last Year's Theme?

Heather is apparently one of many who have decided to reflect upon their posts for 2008. The idea is that you take the first sentence of the first post of each month in 2008 and see if you notice any pattern or common theme. Sounds like this could be fun or dangerous. Perhaps both.

January: Happy New Year!
(yes, let's start off in a jolly party tone! I'm always up for fireworks.)

February: I found myself perusing my gigantic stack of magazines yesterday, when I came across this snippet (that I'm now paraphrasing cause I already recycled the magazine).
(ohhh.... trashy magazine reading.... haven't done any of that since this summer's road trip!)

March: I took a cute little punctuation quiz.
(And came out a colon. And then the room falls silent as we all think of inappropriate responses to that statement.)

April: Do you celebrate April Fool's Day?
(Just a little joke I played on my students. It went fantastically!)

May: Hmmm.... where could Bug be hiding??
(Got to love the mind of a three year old!)

June: Today, I've been slowly trying to go through the photos on my camera disk and clean them off the disk.
(Which reminds me... it's about that time again...)

July: WHOOP WHOOP - we've returned to the East!!
(when we crossed back to the East side of the Mississippi River after having driven out to the Grand Canyon.)

August: It's that time of year again: Preplanning - preparing for another year of school.
(Ugh. Starting on a Friday did stink. But hey, at least we just didn't have a workday this spring; got to jump right into classes without a second thought!)

September: Apparently, I just need some really good prompt ideas for blog entries these days.
(In which I discuss my labors on Labor Day.)

October: Imagine the scenario: a student (not mine) disobeys a teacher (not me), and the teacher writes him up.
(the first time some deep thought show up in this list! But I was rather fond of this post.)

November: Last night, Husband & I watched the new Indiana Jones movie.
(mmmm.... Harrison Ford....)

December: Perhaps my favorite field trip (I'm ignoring the fact that it's my ONLY field trip!) is where I take my physics class to a theme park to study all the different types of rides.
(And it was so much fun!!!)

I think it's safe to say.... this blog's theme? FLUFFY.

Perfect.

Bring It On Home

Haven't done a meme in a while, and this one is all the rage on Facebook right now.... and since I would never post something like this where my students could find it.... it can go here!

I have to say, I am always amused by these things. Some of the answers can be dead-on, while others make absolutely no sense. Looking at this list, though, I am amazed at how much influence Husband has had on my music. I can honestly say I would never have listened to (and even enjoyed!) most of this had he not played it for me.

Instructions
1.Put your iPod on shuffle. (well, the iPod is hooked up to the stereo right now, and not anywhere near where I'm sitting. How about the nifty mP3 player on the computer? It will have to do.)
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. YOU MUST WRITE THAT SONG NAME DOWN NO MATTER HOW SILLY IT SOUNDS!
4. Tag 10 friends who might enjoy doing this as well as the person you got this from.
(Um, if you like this and want to play, consider yourself tagged.)

If someone asks, "Is this okay?" you say:

Silly Seven

I've been in a bit of a writing rut lately, and there are two things that can possibly get you out of that:

- procrastination (blogging sounded like more fun than writing a math test)
- somebody you don't know (thanks Eileen!) tags you for a meme (and you're happy to do it because it turns out that now you feel even more responsible to give fokls something to read)

So, on the off chance that I haven't lost all my readers, here are seven possibly unknown, potentially weird facts about me.

1. In middle school I discovered I liked to light things on fire. Hmmm.... that's probably not much of a surprise, is it?

2. I was a Girl Scout until I graduated high school. Because that was one of the ways I could regularly camp & continue to safely light things on fire. Actually, I might still be a Girl Scout; I don't think they really kick you out at any point, do they?!

3. My college degree is in Forensic Science. Remind me to tell you one day how I ended up teaching. (No, it's not so I could then legally buy chemicals & light them on fire.)

I should probably stop talking about fire.

4. I met my Husband in a bathroom. (oye, the shameless self-promotion!)

5. I love to go out to eat at restaurants that serve you bread. Because then I can fill up on the bread and bring half my dinner home to enjoy another night.

6. If left to its own devices, my natural body rhythm is to sleep from 11pm - 8am. Which doesn't fit in so much with the teaching of high school.

7. I've been snow skiing three times in my life. Each time, I had a fall so spectacular that I should have suffered permanent head damage, but thankfully didn't. (You in the back? Not a word!!)

Labors

Apparently, I just need some really good prompt ideas for blog entries these days. (In reality, I just need to make TIME to write again.)

Grabbed this from Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer this morning, in honor of Labor Day.

How long were your labors?
Bird - 10 hours
Bug - 5 hours

This has always been my answer. The more I think about it, though, I think Bird's was closer to 5 hours.... I will explain myself in the following prompts.

How did you know you were in labor?
Bird & Bug - water broke. I loved it. No question whatsoever that there was a child on the way!!

Bird's water broke in the classic style - there was fluid gushing everywhere. Thankfully, we were in front of Target at the time, so I sent Husband in for lots of bags so that I wouldn't wreck my car.

That was the only indication with her, however, as there were no contractions. And there weren't any for quite some time.

Bug, however, in his eternally helpful manner, plugged up the leak with his head. So although *I* knew they'd broken, the nurses at the hospital did not believe me. Even though I had contactions every 6 minutes - and coming more & more rapidly as time went on.

Where did you deliver?
At a hospital. Very happily. They have medication.

Drugs?
YES.

With Bird, even though my water had broken, my body was not interested in actually expelling her. I ended up on a pitocin drip, and they very nicely gave me the epidural before they started that. That drip started around 1am, and she was born around 6am (hence the 5-hour labor)

Bug was a whole other story. The triage nurses didn't believe I was in labor, since their little test strips did not indicate my water had broken. No matter how many times I'd told them I'd done this once already, they implied that I'd probably just lost control of my bladder and didn't know it.

They finally gave me a bed, since I knew I wasn't leaving the building without a baby. (To be fair, the place was full, and they did give me one as soon as it was available). And since I was in triage, I got to feel the contractions EVERY STINKIN TIME THEY CAME, as they are not allowed to give you meds.

Remember, they did not believe I was delivering that night, so nobody was checking me either. Husband was finally able to convince someone that I was threatening his safety. Which I suppose was fair. I did tell him that I could pull his pancreas out through his nose so he could feel what I was feeling.

Amazingly enough, I was 8cm at this point (I'd only been in that bed for 2 hours). That got them hopping! I was in a room in 10 minutes, and about 9cm. The triage nurse redeemed herself - the epidural guy was waiting for me in my labor room.

Let me tell you - I HELD STILL. And he hooked me up. I hit 10cm aobut 5 minutes later.

C-section?
No.

Who delivered?
Doctors. And just barely with Bug, as he really was in a rush to get out a month early.

It's the Weekend

This week has been crazy... clearly we are closing in on the end of the school year!! Consequently, there are lots of things I'd like to write... but really can't as I know this little hovel is not exactly invisible.

Anyway, just so you all know I'm still alive, here's something I've shamelessly stolen from Marie.

Use the first letter of your name to answer each of the questions. Your answers must be real places, things, names... nothing made up. If you can't think of anything, skip the question. You can't use your name for the boy's/girl's name question. If your name happens to start with the same letter as mine, sorry, you can't use my answers.

5 Positives

After reading Rachel's post (and grabbing her graphic) about needing to curb the negativity, I realized she might be onto something with this positivity thing. (Hmm..... I think I might be making up words. Oh well, this isn't Scrabble and it is my blog!)

So, here are 5 things I can be positive about:

1. My family. I have 2 absolutely beautiful children that I love even when they drive me crazy. And a wonderful husband who loves me even when I drive him crazy.

2. We have a roof over our heads, food in our kitchen, and clothes in our closets. Enough said.

3. There have been so many times I am thankful for the fact that I've taught chemistry for 5 years already. That might sound weird, but I'm teaching AP for the first time this year, and without that background, I'd be sunk. Dead in the water. As it is, I still do an awful lot of work and quite a bit of thinking on my feet in order to stay on top of things, and it always amazes me how it all works out.

4. Following that, I love my students. My AP kids are putting up with me for the 3rd year in a row. And they work HARD. It's nice to see incredibly smart kids actually working. My Physics kids are in their 2nd year, and are amazed by the fact that they actually like the subject. My first year students are a mix of challenging and over & under acheivers, but that helps me to be a better instructor.

5a. Friends in real life. I am not one who makes friends easily, but I am incredibly thankful that I have made several TRUE friends. The kind you can call at 7pm or midnight if you need help, and know that you will receive that help. The kind you can talk to about anything that crosses your mind.

5b. Online friends - I am totally stealing Rachel's 6th point here. :) I am incredibly thankful for all of the wonderful ladies I've met online - for the knowledge I've gained, the laughter and tears that I've shared. You've taught me more than I realized there was to know.

What are you feeling positive about?

Photo Meme

Found this meme from dcrmom a while back. (Hence the poor blog etiquette of linking to her main page rather than her version of the meme that I can't find now!!)

Here's the deal. Type the answer to each question into a Google image search, and then pick an image from the first page of results. Okay? Here we go.

3. Favorite place:

4. Favorite objects:

5. Favorite food:

Album Cover

If you ever wanted to be a rock star and have your own album, now's your chance!! I grabbed this meme of sorts from Marie. Here's the rules:

You are about to have your own band's CD cover. Follow these directions to the letter to make your album cover. It's fun and requires no thought at all.

1. Go here first.
The first article title on the page is the name of your band.

2. Once you've got your band name, you need to title your album by going here.
The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.

3. The third picture on this page, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4. Use your graphics program of choice to throw them together, and post the result

Here's mine:

What color is your tree?

You Should Have a Purple Christmas Tree

For you, the holidays represent a time of creativity and expression.
There's no way you'd do something bland simply for tradition's sake.

You are an independent person, and you definitely do the holidays your own way.
And you're decadent enough to go way over the top with any unusual holiday ideas you have.

Your purple tree would look great with: Purple lights and ornaments

You should spend Christmas Eve watching: A Christmas Story

What you should bake for Santa: "Kitchen sink" cookies - with a ton of things in them

Most of this quiz is pretty true for us:

* Husband does tend to go over the top be creative with some of our decorations. (I mean really, how many folks have a train setup that takes over the dining room?!). It's only a matter of time before we become "that" house with the outdoor lights too.

* We really do watch A Christmas Story on Christmas Eve!! Right after dinner & the kids are in bed.

* I certainly am extraordinarily overzealous love to bake for the holidays. Though instead of one kitchen-sink cookie, we have enough varieties of cookies to fill a kitchen sink!! This year I made sugar cookies, gingerbread men, peanut butter blossoms, egg nog cookies, pinwheels, chocolate & peanut butter fudge, and toffee bars.

I guess the only major unbelievable part is that the tree is purple. That would just never happen as it's Husband's least favorite color. He's learned to tolerate it since Bird wears a lot of purple, but he'd never let a purple tree in the door!!

Thanks to dcrmom for the link!!

Christmas Meme

Grabbed this meme from Alli's blog.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Either - whichever will be easier. Husband disagrees, and thinks that even the hardest of items should be wrapped.

2. Real tree or Artificial?
FAKE!! Always has been, and always will be.
Now, if you look at where our tree goes, that makes a lot of sense!

This is the design from 2006. Not much will change this year except that I've bought a couple houses & stores for the village.

3. When do you put up the tree?
Weekend after Thanksgiving, provided the trains are all set up.

4. When do you take the tree down?
There was that year when we didn't do it until February. But since Bug was born towards the end of January, the goal now it to get it down before his birthday party.

5. Do you like eggnog?
YES!!

6. Favorite gift received as a child?
hmmm... I remember the year my sister & I got a play kitchen set. We played with that thing for YEARS.

7. Do you have a nativity scene?
Yes. It's actually probably the oldest thing we own - it belonged to my grandmother. It was always my favorite thing to set up every year (she gave it to my parents when I was really young), so when I got married my mom passed it on to me.

8. Hardest person to buy for?
My dad.
9. Easiest person to buy for?
Husband, Bug, and Bird.

10. Worst Christmas gift ever received?
I can't think of anything really bad...
11. Mail or email Christmas card?
Both, actually. We can only afford so many pictures, so I will send actual cards to people who like actual cards, and I will email the same thing to folks who don't have an opinion either way!

12. Favorite Christmas Movie?
Every year, the following are "must-see:" Tradition reigns!!
Ernest Saves Christmas
Christmas Vacation
Scrooged
One Magic Christmas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original cartoon, not Jim Carrey)
Charlie Brown Christmas
A Christmas Story
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
After Bird was born, Husband & I began a tradition of shopping the Black Friday sales. Since we always seem to travel for Thanksgiving, it's actually been more like a date morning to us.

14. Have you ever recycled/re gifted a Christmas present?
Yup.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
My mom's meringue chocolate chip cookies.

16. Favorite Christmas song?
Carol of the Bells

17. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
Since we travel at Thanksgiving, we always stay home for Christmas

18. Can you name Santa's reindeer?
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen
(and no, Rudolph doesn't count!)

19. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
One present Christmas Eve - new pajamas for the kids.

20. Most annoying thing about this time of year?
Trying to keep my students focused until finals are over and Christmas vacation has actually begun!

21. Best thing about Christmas?
The Christmas lights, the vacation time, the special church services, the fun things we can do together as a family - the general overall feeling of the season.
Consider yourself tagged if you would like to be!!

3. Brazil (1985)
4. Wings of Desire (1987)

21. The City of Lost Children (1995)
22. Planet of the Apes (1968)
23. V for Vendetta (2005)
24. Metropolis (2001)
25. Gattaca (1997)
26. Fahrenheit 451 (1966)
27. On The Beach (1959)
28. Mad Max (1979)

42. I Robot (2004)
43. Logan’s Run (1976)
44. Strange Days (1995)
45. Idiocracy (2006)
46. Death Race 2000 (1975)
47. Rollerball (1975)
48. Starship Troopers (1997)
49. One Point O (2004)
50. Equilibrium (2002)

I was kind of surprised I haven't seen any more, cause I've certainly READ far more dystopia (gotta love that phase in high school/college). I'm guessing it's because the screen has a tendency to be far more violent & gory for the sake of being gory than my imagination is.

Clothing Pet Peeves

Haven't felt particularly wordy lately, so when I saw this meme by dcrmom, I felt inspired!

Five of my clothing pet peeves:

1. See through white pants.

You know what I'm talking about - those pants/shorts/capris where you can completely see the underwear - no matter if it's spanky-pants, thong, or something in between. I just think white fabrics should be heavier and NOT SEE THROUGH. Nuff said.

2. Bathing suits with lousy cups.

I have been 'blessed' with DDs. The majority of bathing suits go to a C at the most.

3. The lack of variety on little boy clothes.

Because if you don't like clothes that involve sports, your little boy will just have to run around in a diaper and nothing else.

4. Little girl clothes with no modesty or not-little-girl designs/slogans.

Need I say more?

5. Clothes that don't fit me, even though they are my size.

I can understand it not looking good on me, but if it says it's my size, it should fit.

If you want to play along... TAG you're it!

PS - if i were allowed a 6th thing, I would add shoulderpads!!

High School Remembrances

A bit has happened in the last couple days, but I just haven't had the energy to blog about it. (Nothing bad at all, I promise!!). We finally have our AC back though.

So, in the interesting of keeping up the posting habit, I'm copying out dcrmom's meme on high school. Cause this one looks like a bit of fun!!

High School Spirit Meme

1. Who was your best friend? Marian (hmmm.... might be a good thing she doesn't know about this blog yet, cause I think that's the third time I've linked to her this week!)
